The Importance of Routine Visits With Your Dentist in Waterbury
January 22, 2017
As more studies emerge about the connections between your oral health and your overall health and well being, Dr. Luciano Marini can tell you that there’s never been a more important time to take charge of your oral health. The best way we can help you maintain your health is through regular cleaning and checkup appointments. Here’s why routine visits with your dentist in Waterbury are so important.
The Oral Systemic Connection
We now understand that the bacteria that causes periodontal disease can also contribute to diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and vice versa. This is known as the oral systemic connection, and it tells us that your oral health is a very important key to preserving your overall health and well being.
Preventative Care
At Waterbury Smiles, we believe that prevention is the answer to maintaining your oral health. When you visit us every six months for cleanings and checkups some very important things happen. First, we’ll screen you for oral health issues such as periodontal (gum) disease, oral cancer, and tooth decay. These issues can be effectively treated with less invasive treatment when they’re detected early on.
Next, our hygiene team will clean your teeth and remove the excess plaque buildup that causes gum disease and tooth decay. We also take the time to educate you about your oral health and how you can make the most of your home care routine. We believe this empowers our patients to make educated decisions about their dental care.
What is Periodontal Disease?
When plaque is not effectively removed on a daily basis, it builds up and eventually causes your gum tissue to separate from your teeth. This allows harmful bacteria below the gum line, which causes your soft tissues and bone to become infected.
This infection is known as periodontal disease, and if it’s left untreated it will eventually destroy your soft tissue and bone, eliminating support for your teeth. Did you know that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in American adults?
When it’s detected early on, gum disease can often be effectively controlled and even reversed in some cases. Periodontitis, or the advanced stage of gum disease will require a deeper cleaning below the gum line, antibiotic therapy for some patients, and sometimes surgery to keep the disease at bay.
